Hero of my Heart

There are times in life when I don’t understand circumstances that God allows into my life. Recently, I got news that left me distraught. A trial is at my doorstep and to be honest I don’t know what to do, what to say, what to think, or how to feel. At the risk of sounding dramatic, I feel overwhelmed and hopeless in the face of troubling circumstances that I can’t avoid, can’t run from, can’t ignore. But there is hope for me, and there is hope for you, in the promises of God’s Word.
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, not his seed begging bread.” (Psalm 37:23-25)
If I will delight in following the way of the Lord; He promises to uphold me with His hand, to not forsake me. The answer doesn’t present itself in a terrific lightening strike, or clap of thunder… often it involves waiting on the Lord to show us what to do, what to say, what to think, how to feel. The easiest responses to a trial are to either wilt under the pressure or to attack in an attempt to resolve it on our own. But God wants us to wait on Him to show us how to proceed: He doesn’t want us to be our own hero.
“Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.” (Psalm 37:34)
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself…” (Psalm 37:7)
Waiting is quite possibly one of the hardest things to do in life. Having patience for most of us does not come naturally. But verse 34 of Psalm 37 promises us that if we will wait on God and not wander from His way, then he will deliver us from our trouble.
I don’t know what troubled circumstance has entered your life and left you feeling overwhelmed and hopeless as you try your best to handle it. What I do know, is that God promises us that if we delight in His way, if we wait on Him, then He will uphold us, He will be with us, He will deliver us because we are trusting in Him. God wants to be the hero of our heart, we have only to let Him.
“But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.” (Psalm 37: 39-40)
